Unipo and Great Canadian Gaming Corporation have had time to sign a new collective agreement with Casino Ajax for Pickering Casino Resort by Friday, July 22, 2022. However, the two parties failed to reach a compromise in negotiations for union members at the two South Durham Gaming properties before the deadline. So the strike started in both places.
Last week, Unipo and its members threatened eight casino operators in Ontario that a strike would follow if they failed to reach an agreement by midnight on Friday. Despite the strike at the two gaming facilities, the employer reported that work at the venue would continue around the clock, as it provides slots and electronic table games. In a statement, the union also advised customers visiting Pickering Casino Resort to use the west entrance of the gaming facility, which is in the direction of Squire Beach Road. Over the weekend, Unipo said its negotiating team agreed on new terms and signed a tentative agreement on the property of six casinos in Great Canadian Gaming Corp. The six venues are Great Blue Heron Casino, Casino Woodbine, Shorelines Casino Thousand Island, Shorelines Casino Peterborough, Elements Casino Mohawk and Elements Casino Brandford. A vote will be held this week to ratify the contract.
In March this year, Unipo Local 444 also successfully negotiated a new deal for union members at Caesars Windsor Casino. Discussions began a month before that, and the new agreement will raise wages for employees over the next three years. According to the union, more than 93 percent of its employees agreed to the terms.
