Sales of official lottery products in mainland China rose 13.3% year-on-year to about 41.84 billion yuan ($6.03 billion) in September, official data from China’s finance ministry showed.
The growth recorded last month was supported by 24.02 billion yuan in sports lottery sales, which rose 24.3% year-on-year. Welfare lottery sales totaled 17.83 billion yuan in September, slightly up 1.2% year-on-year.
Sales rose in 22 of the 31 provinces and cities in mainland China that were authorized to sell lottery tickets in September. Jiangxi saw the highest increase in lottery sales in September, up 43.5% year-on-year to about 1.08 billion yuan, according to data from the lottery department released Wednesday. Guangdong, however, recorded the highest total lottery sales last month at about 4.11 billion yuan.
Total sales of the two lottery systems in the first nine months of this year were 383.5 billion yuan, up 23.4% year-on-year. Welfare lottery sales rose 4.2% year-on-year to about 165.31 billion yuan, while sales of sports lottery products rose 43.4% to 218.18 billion yuan.
Guangdong remained mainland China’s largest lottery market in the first nine months of 2018, with lottery sales rising 17.3% year-on-year to 35.95 billion yuan. Jiangsu followed, where lottery sales rose 31.7% year-on-year to 32.99 billion yuan.
China’s eastern province of Shandong ranked third with ticket sales of nearly 29.71 billion yuan in the nine months to Sept. 30, an increase of 20.8% year-on-year, official data showed.
