Saskatchewan State recently announced its provincial budget plan for fiscal 2023-24. The budget will continue to invest C$92.4 million in game payments in First Nation and Metis communities across the state. It should be noted that a significant portion of the gaming revenue came from the state’s newly regulated iGaming platform.
Saskatchewan debuted its online gambling website on November 3, 2022, the province’s first effort to provide iGaming under regulated conditions. For the plan, the British Columbia Lottery Company has agreed to supply the PlayNow platform to the province. This is the first regulated and locally supervised online gambling website in the province.
First Nations, Metis and Northern Affairs Minister Don McMorris commented on the budget and said it was a record investment. In other words, as the government provides support and resumes work with Nations and Metis partners, they will have a huge impact on the local indigenous communities.
It should be recalled that the Government Relations Department is responsible for allocating the distributed casino game revenue to the First Nations Trust, Community Development Corporation, Clarence Campau Development Fund, etc. This is done under the Game Framework Agreement and the Saskatchewan Game Corporation Act 2002.
According to Do, the 2023-24 budget provided approximately CA$249.1 million in targeted funding to First Nation and Metis organizations. This is a remarkable increase of 6.8% over last year’s budget. In January, Saskatchewan released its first number in a newly regulated market. The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority, which has exclusive rights to operate the website, reported that the market collected more than C$31.8 million of online betting transactions in the first two months. This amount led to a net return of about C$1.6 million.
In the report, SIGA shared that online betting volume reached C$14.8 million in November 2022, while soaring to C$17 million in December 2022. At the time, the website had 8,015 registered users. This means that for all registered accounts as of December 31, 2022, the platform has handled an average of CA$3,967 bets in the first two months
This month, Saskatchewan announced that it will launch another new crown corporation to oversee gaming brands Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan. The new regulator will monitor game policy and management. It also aims to eliminate real or perceived conflicts because both licenses and regulators are under SLGA jurisdiction.
