A promoter of the resort’s World Genting (RWG) tourist complex (pictured), which includes Malaysia’s only licensed casino, said in a notice posted on the property’s website that the resort would remain closed as the government decided to ease lockdown measures this week. The suspension of all resort operations in Malaysia was due to run until May 12, according to Genting Malaysia Bhd.
The suspension was applied to resort world genting, which has a theme park located in the genting highland near Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. It was also applied to several non-game resorts operated by genting Malaysia (resort world awana, resort world kijal, resort world langkawi).
The Malaysian government introduced strict lockdown measures in mid-March in an effort to stem the further spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Those measures, including restrictions on people’s movement and curfews, have been extended until May 12.
On May 1, the government said business activities would be able to resume from May 4, as the country was set to go into a partially eased lockdown.
The government has nevertheless told businesses to implement guidelines to ensure there are no large gatherings and to take precautions to reduce the risk of people getting infected. Businesses have also encouraged employees to work from home if possible.
Despite the eased lockdown, Genting Malaysia said in a recent statement that “Resort World Genting, Resorts World Awana, Resorts World Kijal, and Resorts World Langkawi will remain closed until further notice.” Accommodations have been closed since March 18. The temporary suspension has been extended three times, most recently until May 12.
“As more information becomes available, we will continue to monitor the situation and make necessary announcements,” the casino resort operator said.
Banking group Nomura said in a recent note that it expects annual sales in Genting Malaysia to only recover to 2019 levels in 2022 through a “tick” recovery.
Malaysia’s daily growth in new coronavirus cases eased to remain below 100 for the past two weeks. On Wednesday, Malaysia reported 45 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the cumulative number of infections to 6,428.
