After troublesome months and many issues, the Philippine Entertainment Game Company (PAGCOR) has made important decisions in the meantime. The Philippine Marine Game Operator (PAGO) was shut down by PAGCOR earlier this month, and now the licenses of marine game operators involved in illegal activities will be revoked in the Philippines.
Serious criticism:
PAGCOR decided to shut down PGO after some serious criticism. Businesses were accused of activities related to credit card fraud, illegal detention, and human trafficking.
The Philippine Police (PNP) decided to leave the task to their anti-cybercrime group, the intelligence group of the Special Action Force, the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission, and joined forces with an interagency council on anti-trafficking.
The first suspension was already in progress. On Thursday, May 16, the agency suspended CGC Technologies, a well-known gaming service provider in gaming customer relations. The authorized offshore company has been suspected since the beginning of May, and cross-agency search operations have revealed several reasons for the suspension. The main reason for the suspension is the six buildings operated by CGC Technologies. Only two of the six buildings on the company’s Pampanga site in Clark had the correct licenses issued by PAGCOR, and without those licenses, work is prohibited in those countries. CGC has a chance to get a license again, but only after detailed forensic examination.
During the investigation, authorities decided to confiscate about 1,000 computers and other devices from the building in question and face scrutiny.
Politicians Against PAGCOR and PGO:
Alejandro Tengco, the president and CEO of PAGCOR, approves the authorities’ decision to repatriate foreigners. Most of them are from Indonesia, Vietnam, Nepal, Bhutan, and China, and they will have to return to their countries.
Tengco said, “We will continue to apply stricter monitoring to overseas game licensees and service providers. PAGCOR will continue to work in partnership with law enforcement to ensure a safe and responsible gaming environment for people of other nationalities as well as the Philippines. Only through regulated and responsible games can we minimize, if not completely eradicate, all crimes related to gaming activities.”
Many politicians also support this decision.
Sen. Sherwin Ctchalian, one of the PGO’s biggest opponents, spoke about the PGO in March, saying he did not see much economic benefit from it. On the contrary, the PGO faced rising crime and corruption, which damaged the country’s reputation among various parties, including tourists and potential foreign investors.
At the time, authorities said Pogo would stay in the Philippines, but insisted on maintaining the reputation and integrity of the industry in the Philippines at the highest level.
