After years of waiting, Nova Scotia has now launched its own online casino platform. This makes it the second largest casino platform in the Atlantic. The Atlantic Lottery Company has had two years of hard work, but on Thursday, July 21, 2022, the state introduced an online casino portal available through the Crown’s alc.ca website.
Online casino planning has been under discussion for several years now, and its introduction will provide a regulated and safe environment for mobile betting. It will also keep some of its revenue in the provinces by preventing locals from switching to overseas websites. However, some game experts disagree and believe it could be detrimental to gambling fans.
Treasury Secretary Alan McMaster, who reported the launch of the new online platform, said it could be accessed through ALC’s website. He said the government did not intend to make much of the announcement, only to be able to use the platform for those who want to try it.
The minister said the decision was made not long ago after discussions with Brian Comer, the minister in charge of addiction and mental health. McMaster explained that iGame has become quite widespread recently because people can access such websites from all over the world and gamblers are quite easy to get addicted to.
The new online casino platform is regulated by the province, enabling a safe gambling digital environment, and also provides a link to the PlayWiz tool that allows users to limit the time they spend on the platform or the amount they spend on online gambling.
According to Treasury officials, the new iGaming website will generate about C$10 million in revenue in its first year of operation. But Minister McMaster was convinced that this was not one of the factors that led the Government to introduce it. And instead, the reason was that the government could regulate websites and protect people.
Despite being late to the party, Nova Scotia also introduced a single-event bet in February this year, and it officially launched on February 11, 2022, just in time for this year’s Super Bowl, one of the world’s largest sporting events and rich in betting volume.
New Brunswick became the first Atlantic region to offer online betting when it launched its platform in 2020 before Nova Scotia. Initially, there were concerns about the size of the bet, but it attracted $7.3 million in Canadian dollars for its first fiscal year operations. ALC has also been lobbying Prince Edward Island’s online casinos, and has yet to debut, despite the provincial being licensed in 2021.
