Hong Kong’s Devan Tang, a poker player, beat Canada-based Peter Jetten to secure a prize of 9.7 million Hong Kong dollars (about $1.24 million) in the Jeju Triton Poker Series Short Deck competition. Organizers of the Triton Poker Series announced Monday that Mr. Tang was taking part in the second leg of the ongoing six-sport tournament in the Korean resort of Jeju.
This year’s Tour Stop has a total of six tournaments ending on Saturday.
The Jeju event is being held at Jeju Shinhwa World, a venue owned and operated by Hong Kong-listed Landing International Development Ltd. The casino is open to foreigners only according to Korean game rules.
There were 69 entries in the competition that Tang (唐) won, and the participation fee was HK$500,000. Eight players divided the prize money close to HK$15.28 million.
Mr. Tang’s latest cash prize has boosted his career earnings to more than $6 million, strengthening his grip on the second highest-grossing Chinese athlete of all time. Mr. Zetten came in second to HK$7.04 million, and Frenchman Romain Arnault came in third to earn HK$4.54 million.
Triton Poker Ambassador Jason Koon took fourth place, earning nearly 3.44 million Hong Kong dollars. Koon is leading the world prize money rankings for the Short Deck Texas Hold’em tournament, where 52 card decks were reduced to 36 by removing no more than six cards.
Tang reportedly rode his luck with back-to-back cards that included at least five pocket aces and four kinds of cards on his way to the title. “I was very lucky. I was lucky the whole time,” he said. “When you play such a big game and make the final table, you have to do your best.”
On Sunday, American Justin Bonomo won the tournament’s first event in Jeju, an ant-only game, on a short deck with a buy-in of HK$250,000 (W250,000). The tournament had 65 entries, including 28 re-entry, with the prize money of nearly HK$15.28 million (W15.28 million). Bonomo won the first prize of HK$4.6 million (W4.6 million), his second title this year. Last year, he was ranked as the highest prize winner in poker history, earning more than $25 million (W25 million).
Bonomo’s final opponent on Sunday was Malaysia’s Yu Wei Xiang, who took HK$3.3 million.
Triton poker was founded in 2015 by Richard Yong, a Malaysian businessman and poker player. The high stakes series target wealthy businessmen and top professional players.
