Samsung Lions right-hander Kim Yoon-soo is currently serving in the Korean Armed Forces Sports Unit (Sangju Sangmu) baseball team. He will return to the team after being discharged from the military in July. He will support his team’s starting lineup.
Kim was drafted 52 times in the second round of the sixth round in 2018 and joined Samsung. The following year, he made his debut in the first division in 2019. He started as an interim starter and also played as an alternate starter. In total, he had one win and one loss with a 4.63 ERA in 11 ⅔ innings in five games (two starts). In 2020, he only participated in the bullpen session. In 61 games and 58 innings, he had three wins and five losses, 12 holds and an ERA of 4.66.
In 2021, he struggled with a 6.63 ERA for one hold in 19 innings in 20 games (one start). In 2022, he finished the season with three wins, three losses and a 5.91 ERA for three holds in 35 innings in 37 games (one start). Since then, he was accepted to the executive vice presidential office and left his post.
Kim Yun-su’s strength is his fastball speed. After joining the pro baseball pro league, he increased his fastball speed to over mid to late 150 km/h. However, he had difficulties due to poor control of his pitches. He refined his pitches while taking starting classes at Sangmu. This resulted in him playing in a total of 42 innings in eight games. In the Futures League in the second division, he played with five wins and one loss and an earned run average of 1.71. While he had 24 walks, he struck out 45. His batting average is 0.207.
In both the Southern and Northern leagues of the Futures League, he ranked first in ERA, first in victory, and second in strikeouts. Expectations are high.
“Kim Yoon-soo seems to be doing well in the rotation as a starter at the team’s Sangmu,” Samsung coach Park Jin-man said. “He seems to be in good physical condition. If he is discharged from the military in good health, he will check his overall condition after joining the team.”
“In July, it is midsummer, so it is time for players to have a hard time physically. If Kim Yun-su comes back and plays as a starter, I think I can give the existing pitchers a break when they are tired,” he said.
Samsung is operating its starting lineup with Conor Seabold, Denny Reyes, Won Tae-in, Lee Seung-hyun (left-hander) and Lee Ho-sung. Lee, who is in his fourth year as a pro, and Lee Ho-sung, who are in his second year, are doing a full-time rotation for the first time this year. When he needs a comma in the middle of the season, Kim can pass out his luggage.
How is Baek Jung-hyun, the current starting pitcher, who was out of his team’s roster on April 4 due to calf injury? “The timing of his return has yet to be determined,” Park said.
As for relief pitchers Choi and Choi, “Choong-yeon has finished rehabilitation and is slowly getting ready. Choi is preparing well in the U.S.” Choi left for Arizona, the U.S., late last month. He is receiving training in pitching at the Baseball Center.
If pitchers return one by one, the mound is expected to be more solid.
Meanwhile, outfielder Kim Hyun-joon, who was canceled on Wednesday to reorganize his team, is also showing good performance in the Futures League. He displayed robust hitting performance with a batting average of 0.563 (nine hits in 16 times at bat) in four games. “The batting pace seems to be very good. We are continuing to observe him,” Park said.
