Manchester United are reportedly interested in Glisson Bremer.
The British publication Tribuna reported on Monday (June 29) that “United are considering Bremer as one of their targets to strengthen their defense this summer. The Red Devils have already made contact with Bremer’s representatives in order to gain an edge over other teams. Juventus will only accept a move if an offer of around €70 million comes in,” the report said.
United have been disappointing this season. Last season, the club qualified for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) and won the English Football League Cup (EFL Cup) under new manager Eric ten Haag. It was United’s first trophy in seven years.
However, in Van Gaal’s second year in charge, the club hasn’t lived up to expectations. They finished last in the UCL group stage behind Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, and Galatasaray. A third-place finish would have qualified them for the UEFA Europa League, but they ended their European campaign.
The Premier League (PL) is not looking good either. United is currently in sixth place in the league. They are nine points behind fourth-place Aston Villa and six points behind fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur. Aston Villa have one more game to play, and depending on how they perform in Europe this season, they could finish as high as fifth in the PL and qualify for the UCL. United will need to finish at least fifth to qualify for the UCL next season.
While the season is still ongoing, United’s search for a new center back has been discussed. United were linked with several players last summer, including Kim Min-Jae. However, the club was unable to add to the defense as Harry Maguire stayed on. Despite having the likes of Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Rafael Varane, and Jonny Evans, the need for a top-notch center-back has been raised.
Bremer emerged as one of the candidates. Bremer left Brazil in 2018 to join Torino. He excelled for four years and was named the best defender in the Italian Serie A in the 2021-22 season. Juventus made a move for him.
Bremer quickly became a regular starter. He made 30 Serie A appearances last season and has played 28 league games so far this season. Bremer’s contract runs until the summer of 2028. With so much time left on his contract, United would have to pay a huge transfer fee to sign him.
