Woodbine Entertainment is set to make a special announcement for equestrian this week, as Ontario’s leading horse racing operator will add a new betting vertical to the track. Swinger, also known as omniwiger, will soon be implemented as an option for woodbine racetrack and woodbine mohawk park properties.
Also known as swingers or omni around the world, athletes are leading international bets that have to choose two of the top three in the race. One of the participants can then win the race in favor of a horse that finished first and second, first and third, or second and third. Betting starts at 1 Canadian dollar and takeaways at 18%.
In a press release, the operator said the exciting swinger/omni betting will now be added to both Woodbine Racecourse and Woodbine Mohawk Park. The new product will be available on both tracks from Thursday, June 1, 2023. The new betting option is also available for all races on the integrated online track.
But news from the Ontario horse racing organization isn’t everything. This is because the group has also informed equestrian about this weekend’s qualifying rescheduling at Woodbine Mohawk Park. As a qualifying round for a 2-year-old this weekend, Track will review the number of entries to determine whether a two-day qualifying round is needed.
According to the operator, if changes are needed, there are several possible scenarios. If the number of entries is only needed for one day, all qualifiers on the track will compete on Friday. If many entries require two days, a regular qualifying round will be held on Friday and a two-year-old qualifying round will be held on Saturday.
Finally, the group reported that each qualifying session will start at 10 a.m. In addition, participants for this weekend’s qualifying round will be suspended at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. The operator also reminded riders that submissions for qualification should be submitted through Standardbread Canada’s online participation system. More information on qualifying participants and new bets can be found on the operator’s website.
Earlier this month, Woodbine Entertainment also announced in Ontario that it was working on adding horse racing to its private online sports book as a betting option. This has been going on for some time now. But recently, Woodbine’s head of commercial operations, Michael Copeland, said the consolidation could be completed before autumn this year and the operator was cautiously optimistic.
In a separate announcement, the group said it would say goodbye to long-term CEO and president Jim Lawson. He is expected to step down in the fall of 2023, but no exact date is yet available. But there are expectations around the group that he may not leave completely and may take on another role.
