In late March 2023, the city planning committee said it opposed a request to develop a new event center at Alberta’s Red Deer Resort and Casino. However, O’Chise Hospitality Inc., the owner of the gambling facility, is not satisfied with the decision. The owner was recently reported by the committee that he intends to appeal the March 22 ruling.
Last month, the city planning committee reported that members voted 4-2 in favor of rejecting the owner’s proposal to build a new event center as part of the redevelopment of the old Cambridge Hotel and Convention Center. It should be mentioned that this property is located on the corner of 50th and 32nd streets.
The commission explained that it rejected the center’s request because there were not enough on-site parking lots to accommodate all of its enhanced uses. Meanwhile, the owner was granted permission to relocate the Jackpot casino from downtown to a site in South Reddier last year. The idea is to relocate the casino to an existing hotel convention center in the southwest of the land.
But that’s not all because O’Chise Hospitality Inc. aims to replace the convention center by developing a new 3,028-square-meter event center that will be offered in about 2,000 sets. It will be located on the site and will replace two former nightclubs northeast of the site. But at the moment, the plan will be on hold.
The initial plan would clear the way for a modernized event center that would tear down both clubs and double the space in the former amenities. To accommodate the need for more parking spaces, the owner wants to build an outside parking lot just south of 32nd Street and the hotel.
The Red Deer City planner advised the MPC to approve the development with the proposed parking variance, but most members were concerned about insufficient on-site parking.
