Defending champion Ulsan University has advanced to the finals with a sweep of Busan Arts University.
Ulsan University defeated Busan Institute of the Arts 112-73 in the semifinals of the men’s college division of the 40th MBC National Collegiate Basketball Championship on Tuesday at Sangju Gymnasium Gukwan.
Wang Chan-young (25 points, 7 rebounds) and Bae Hyung-jik (24 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) put on a two-man show, while Shim Jae-beom (11 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists) recorded a double-double. Busan Arts University, on the other hand, was unable to overcome the power differential with Ulsan despite a strong effort from Son Bum-seo (32 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists). They ended the tournament with a loss.
Ulsan University easily took the lead early in the game. Bae Hyung-jik and Park Jung-hyuk combined for 24 points in the first quarter to jump out to an early lead. Wang Chan-young spearheaded the offense with 10 points in the second quarter and 15 points in the third. The pendulum actually swung in Ulsan’s favor in the third quarter. With the extra breathing room, Ulsan evenly distributed the playing time and pulled away for the win.
Meanwhile, in an earlier game, Dongwon National University of Science and Technology defeated Woosuk University 72-64. Kim Kyung-soo (18 points, five rebounds, and six assists) and Lee Hyun-joo (17 points, five rebounds, and five assists) were the standout performers for the hosts. Woosuk University was led by Heo Eun (26 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists), but it was not enough.
Dongwon University of Science and Technology advanced to the finals and will play Ulsan University for the title. Their final game will be held at the same venue on Nov. 21 starting at 1 p.m.
